Frequently Asked Questions

Home health care agencies provide skilled services for an illness or injury in the comfort of the patient’s home. The goal of home care is to promote recovery, restore independence, improve disease self-management behaviors, and decrease unnecessary hospitalizations. Home care is often a preferred choice of rehabilitation for patients over costly facilities when the patient can safely remain at home.

Premier Homecare offers health care services such as skilled nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and medical social work services to meet the complex needs of our patients.

Why should I choose home care for my loved one?

A change in environment can be a difficult adjustment, especially for older individuals. By choosing home care, you or your loved one can continue to live in the environment you feel most comfortable: your own home. Living at home also means loved ones are able to maintain their independence and keep the daily routines they've grown accustomed to, all while staying close to family and friends.

Why should I choose Premier Homecare?

When you select Premier Homecare to provide care for yourself or a loved one, you can rest assured that you are choosing the very best. Premier Homecare is known throughout East Texas for providing outstanding, compassionate care to patients of all ages. Our reputation is underscored by a commitment to excellence and an intense dedication to our work.

What is the difference between a residential service agency and other care providers offering similar services?

Put simply, home care agencies accept responsibility for screening, training, insuring, and supervising of the caregivers on their team. Other home care models--such as employment agencies and registry/brokers--don't have the same responsibility which puts you or your loved one at risk.

Premier Homecare is proud to be a member of TAHC (Texas Association of Home Care) and NAHC (National Association of Home Care).

What should I expect during the initial visit from Premier Homecare?

A Registered Nurse will conduct an initial assessment and determine if the patient meets the eligibility criteria for home health admission. If the patient is an appropriate candidate, then the Registered Nurse will conduct a thorough interview and professional assessment prior to developing a patient centered plan of care.

The nurses’ assessment will identify areas where you may benefit from education in self-care management and partners with your doctor to promote disease prevention, in addition, to providing hands-on intervention – which includes the family or caregivers.

This team approach helps to make the transition from a hospital or nursing facility to your home much easier, and actively engages you and your caregivers in your health care.

What are the qualifying criteria for receiving home health care under Medicare benefit?

There are several requirements for receiving home health care under Medicare:
  • The patient must remain under the care of a physician who has agreed to oversee home health care services.
  • The patient must need either skilled nursing care or therapy on an intermittent basis (i.e., physical/occupational/speech therapy)
  • The patient must be considered homebound. This means that your normally unable to safely leave your home without the assistance of others and the aide of assistive devices. If doing so, it would require a considerable and taxing effort. You may leave home to receive treatment that can not be provided in the home. You may also leave for brief and infrequent absences for some non-medical reasons.

How are skilled care and personal care services different?

Home care services are often used to describe both skilled care and personal care services. However, the types of services differ in comparison.

Premier Homecare primarily provides skilled homecare services. Skilled services are provided by licensed or certified professionals for the clinical treatment of an illness of injury. Services include nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy. Home health aides are certified nursing assistances and can assist with SHORT TERM personal care needs. Provider services are often not covered through traditional insurance policies.

Personal care services' aides or attendants provide help with personal care, meal preparation, or normal activities of daily living to maintain independence within the home. This is provided by an agency that offers provider services. This type of service is often private pay or may be funded through a government program.

How do I determine the frequency of home care services needed?

The frequency and type of home health visits and the services provided are based on your personal plan of care. Your doctor may change your plan of care, increasing or decreasing the number of visits or services provided as needed based upon changes in your overall health. The home health professions will provide you with information regarding the established discipline frequencies.

How do I know if I have coverage for home health care services?

Home health care services are often covered under traditional health insurance policies. Provided you meet eligibility requirements, Medicare will pay for your covered home health care for as long as you’re eligible and your doctor certifies that you need it. Private insurance companies may also cover home health care services.
